Milford Art Stroll - River town, Art town, Hometown
The pretty little town of Milford, in the center of the small state of Delaware, brands itself River Town, Art Town, Hometown with an exciting, growing art colony. It’s history reaches back to the days when ship building, an art in itself, was the major industry on the Mispillion River operating 7 ship yards. The river meanders through town and the town acknowledges the integral part it plays with an attractive river walk along it’s banks which displays public art tour of a classic yacht built there - ART.
The Farmer’s Market is held every Saturday from May through October in the park by the Riverwalk and a few local artists have booths. The library features a beautiful mural by the late famed Delaware artist, Jack Lewis. Just around the corner from the library is a magnificent series of block long murals, courtesy of the Mispillion Art League, depicting historic scenes of days gone by. A new mural celebrating the diversity and cultures of the town is on the wall of the restaurant, Arena's.
The delightful Riverfront Theater has been renovated to seat 200 and they stage live theater regularly. Next door is the acclaimed School of Music of Delaware. They not only teach music but also give about 75 performances per year. And the town also boasts the excellent and lively Milford Community Band. They perform a number of times a month in different locals.
The town has a number of restaurants and a good coffee shop, Dolce. The flagship restaurant is the award-winning Abbotts Grill but smaller ethnic eateries like Bibi's Taqueria and Sabor Latino are also worth exploring. The Tavern is an atmospheric bar popular with locals and visitors alike.
The Mispillion Art League has a light, airy showroom and a practical workshop space. They host a number of different shows throughout the year and offer a variety of workshops for children and adults alike. Next door to the theater, artist Marcia Reed's elegant Gallery 37 exhibits artists from around the nation. Blu Butterfly Studio is just around the corner and Body Canvas gallery is opposite the post office.
Two historic homes, within downtown, have been restored and operates as a Bed & Breakfasts. The Causey Mansion has been named one of the Top 10 in the NE & Mid-Atlantic by Huffington Post. The Towers is a perfect “Rapunzel house” painted bright pink and features 4 rooms tastefully decorated.
